Sloppy Joes

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 ½ lbs ground beef (lean)
  • ½ onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 green pepper, diced
  • 1 cup water
  • ¾ cup ketchup (catsup)
  • 3 oz Spice Horizon balsamic vinegar
  • ¼ tsp Worcestershire Sauce
  • 2 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp Spice Horizon dry mustard powder
  • 1 ½ tsp fine ground Himalayan sea salt
  • ½ tsp fresh ground Spice Horizon black peppercorns
  • 1 cup water
  • ½ tsp Spice Horizon cayenne pepper

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Brown ground beef and onion in a large iron skillet. Turn heat to medium and cook and stir until the mixture forms small crumbles (about 10 minutes). Drain off excess fat.
  2. Stir in minced garlic, diced green pepper and cook another 2-3 minutes. Add 1 cup of water and stir. Scrape the bottom of the pan to bring up any flavorful bits from the bottom.
  3. Mix in ketchup (catsup), Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, dry mustard, balsamic vinegar, and black pepper. Add 1 cup more water and return to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low, stirring occasionally until the liquid evaporates and thick (about 30 minutes)

SUGGESTED TOPPINGS:

  • sliced pickles
  • BBQ sauce
  • Additional ground pepper and salt to taste.
